If there’s one member of the Grove team who knows how to make the most of a day off, it’s Otto. Our hotel dog is happiest with a sea breeze, a coastal path to explore and somewhere lovely to stop for a well-earned rest along the way.

Luckily, Pembrokeshire is full of places to enjoy together, from sweeping sandy beaches to dramatic coastal walks and welcoming cafés serving a delicious post-walk lunch.

Whether you’re planning a dog-friendly holiday in Pembrokeshire or simply looking for somewhere new to explore with your own four-legged companion, here are three of Otto’s favourite places where you could start.

1. Newgale Beach

If you were able to ask Otto his favourite beach, we think Newgale would be a strong contender!

Stretching for almost two miles, Newgale is perfect for a bracing coastal walk, a game of fetch or simply enjoying the fresh sea air. The beach’s vast expanse of sand means there’s plenty of room to explore, while the surrounding coastline offers a beautiful backdrop whatever the weather.

We recommend heading to the southern end of the beach, towards the caravan park, where dogs can access the sand throughout the year. From 1st May to 30th September, dogs are not permitted on the central section between the lifeguard flagpoles, so check the beach signs before setting off.

2. Marloes Peninsula

For a walk that combines spectacular scenery with a very good lunch stop, Otto loves the Marloes Peninsula.

This beautiful stretch of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is made for exploring on foot. The circular coastal route takes in grassy headlands, dramatic cliffs and far-reaching sea views, with the chance to spot seabirds and other wildlife along the way. At around four miles, it makes a wonderful half-day adventure for anyone who enjoys discovering the coast at a gentler pace.

Dogs are welcome on the Marloes Peninsula coastal walk, although they should be kept on leads around livestock and along the coast path.

And then there’s the all-important lunch stop. Just a short walk from the Marloes Sands car park, Runwayskiln is a welcoming coastal kitchen serving fresh, locally sourced food, coffee and homemade cakes. It’s a favourite place to refuel after a walk, with dogs welcome too. We recommend checking opening times before travelling, particularly outside the main season.

3. Tenby South Beach

Few places capture the charm of a Pembrokeshire day out quite like Tenby. With its colourful harbour, pastel-painted buildings and beautiful coastline, it’s a lovely place to spend a few hours, and Tenby South Beach is another one of Otto’s favourite places to stretch his legs.

The long, sandy beach is backed by dunes and opens out towards Penally and Giltar Point. At low tide, the expanse of sand is particularly impressive, offering plenty of space for a seaside stroll and time to take in the views.

We recommend visiting the southern end of the beach towards Penally and Giltar Point. From 1st May to 30th September, dogs are restricted from the section nearest Tenby town, while the southern section remains accessible. Dogs must also be kept on leads on the promenade and in the car parks during this period.

After your walk, head into Tenby to explore the independent shops, enjoy a coffee or find somewhere to settle in for lunch. It’s an easy way to turn a beach walk into a relaxed day out.
